Quotes:
1. “the world genius is related
to the Latin word for testicles. Maybe that explains why it’s so rarely used to
describe a woman.” (pg.28)
People like to use
labels and these labels discriminate and subjugate people who are not in the
category. When the Guerrilla Girls pointed out how the world genius is a word
created for men only it was like an eye opener because not even I knew this. Although
they as insinuating that many other people, specifically those who like to
place people into the minority class, know this and use the word to make
themselves and others, they deem, like seem superior.
2. “The world of high art, the
Kind that gets into museums and history books, is run by a very small group of
people. Our posters have proved over and over again that these people, no
matter how smart or good intentioned, have been biased against women and
artists of color.” (pg.25)
This
can be compared to the government or any other organization that has power. The
Guerrilla Girls are saying that no matter what the organization is trying to
achieve they will always put their own “people” before others. They want to
stay in control and the only way to do that is to not give power to those
opposed them, like women and people of color.
Art Projects:
WAY TO GO, DUDE! MEN
DOMINATE ALMOST EVERY ART DEPARTMENT IN THE U.S. YOU’RE SURE TO GET A JOB! (86)
This project shows just how unbalanced the gender class of
the U.S. is. If women can’t even get a job as an art teacher/professor what
chances do everyone else have. Art is about acceptance and changing the norms
and yet in a place where you learn about art and there is no more of a
difference then in any other department where will the future lead us.
George Bush, “The Education President” (69)
This art project is bashing the power the president has and
how he doesn’t always live up to his promises. People know that they can die in
service, but when you create a lie in order to make people die for you that is
not justice its unjustly using the power given to you. This is what the
Guerrilla Girls are trying to say, that people and power don’t want to make
changes and they want people to obey them because that way they stay in power.
