Group 4 Summary
The topic we chose to cover is covert racism. Covert racism is a form of racial discrimination that is disguised and subtle, rather than public or obvious. We included examples of covert racism by forms of a video as well as images. We used real life examples to show covert racism by posting a video from Youtube. Besides videos and images, we chose two artists who we believe represent current issues such as racism, poverty, and conflict towards the black community. These artists include Tana Hargest and Theaster Gates.
Tana Hargest's project is BNI, which was launched in 1999. She uses her art to bring cultural interventions to the artistic marketplace by using her humor as well. Her project was also multimedia and reached various people. Theaster Gates is an American social artist, curator, urbanist, and facilitator. He uses his talent to show different sides of poverty, slavery and industrial exploitation. Both these artists share the same goals to inspire individuals to challenge and advocate different ideas.
