Group 7 Presentation Summary - Brian R. Diany R. Nick R.

Occupation protest or Occupying space is taking over an area whether it be in a building, train station or even outside of a school to protest. The main goal of this protest is to be heard, change the status quo or for public policy to be change. The reason why Occupying movement started is because of economic inequality.  For example, an unfair salary or basically a lack income being distributed in workplaces, businesses, schools and companies. Making the middle and lower class to go into poverty, while the rich stay at the top. On January 25 2011 a protest was occuring in Cairo Egypt and the type of protest that they were doing during that time was occupying Tahrir Square. More than 50,000 protesters occupies Tahrir Square protesting against Hosni Mubarak for being corrupted and stealing money from the citizens. A few days later the amount of protestors increase to 300,000 protestors.  Due to this many protestors weren’t ignore, since the press, military and government saw their increasing numbers. Mohamed Bouazizi who was apart of this protest, took his own life to shows and protest against the government corruption.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, the release of a 2005 recording of Trump commenting about how his celebrity status allowed him to force himself on women prompted numerous women to come forward with accusations about his past inappropriate sexual conduct. Trump dismissively called the recording “locker room talk” and disputed the accusers’ claims.

The idea of the Women’s March began on the social networking website Facebook the day after the election, when a woman from Hawaii named Teresa Shook voiced her opinion that a pro-woman march was needed as a reaction to Trump’s victory. After thousands of women signed up to march, veteran activists and organizers began planning a large-scale event scheduled for January 21, 2017, the day after Inauguration Day. The Women’s March became a worldwide protest that took place in Washington D.C. on January 21st, 2017. It was known as the largest single-day protest in the U.S. history .It was done the day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump. This movement led all people of gender, race, ages, culture, political affiliations and backgrounds in the nation to protest together. Their mission was to “harness the political power of diverse women and their communities to create transformative social change.
Women’s March is a women-led movement providing intersectional education on a diverse range of issues and creating entry points for new grassroots activists & organizers to engage in their local communities through trainings, outreach programs and events. Women’s March is committed to dismantling systems of oppression through nonviolent resistance and building inclusive structures guided by self-determination, dignity and respect.” On September 17, 2011 many protests were starting to occupy Wall Street in Zuccotti park near the financial district of New York City. The New York Citizens wanted to show their disagreement towards big money companies due to greed and corruption.  Many people saw the corruption that these major companies and organization were in Wall Street. What make this occupation and protest so significant is that many people around the country (900 cities) joined to protest. Many of the protest decided to sleep outside and stay until this corruption stops. More than three months had past and the number of protestors had increased. Since the occupation movement was spread like wildfire, other countries took decided to take inspiration and start their own occupation rally.
