Unnamed VHS Tapes Instagram page: Final Project
With my project, I hope to open the eyes for the public on how the media represents women, how stereotypes for different women can be influenced by the media. Different stereotypes follow women around for the rest of their lives, some stereotypes include, feisty latinas, dumb bimbo blonde, sassy black girl, so one and so forth. Women are put into these stereotypes and cookie cutter ideas, and they are all repeated and antiquated ideas that have been put on women for years. I want to focus on the representation of women, and why women are put with the stereotypes of being crazy, chocolate loving, emotionally unstable humans. I want to talk about how it has also molded a lot of women's personality, and how women might feel that they have to act like these representations in order to be seen in this society. I wanted to make a note of how power dynamics in movies change how we view women, how there are different combinations of an idea that women are followed by.
One of my main inspirations for this project has been Cindy Sherman. A photographer that, to me, began a different kinda of, "self-portrait", someone who played with what representation truly means. Taking on the personality and look of other people is something I find very interesting, she was breaking the wall we know as representation. She took on these characters and project not originally to raise awareness of anything, she wanted to explore the characters and their mindset.
Another artist who helped me open up my mind about the portrait and the portrait of one's self in other people’s image would be Stacy Renee Morrison. Stacy is a photographer who also does a lot of self-portrait work, she also takes on a different persona similar to Nina. Stacy takes photographs of herself and put elements of another woman named Sylvia DeWolf Ostrander, A women who died in 1925. I'm choosing to include her in this writing because she chooses a different form of self-representation, by continuing to show representation for someone no longer in this life.

My project has been
made into an online portfolio that I have put on Instagram. The
Instagram is called Unnamed VHS Tapes. The name of my
page was inspired by Cindy Sherman’s photography series, "Untitled Film
Stills". In my Instagram page, I did my rendition either scenes
from iconic movies or characteristics that are portrayed by women in film.
Some of the films were Pretty Women, Carrie, and Legally Blonde, to name some
of them. Some of the movies/characters I chose to portray didn't have any
point or higher meaning to the photo, other than I just thought it would be
fun. Taking these photos was originally just meant to be a challenge for
myself, to force me to be in front of the camera instead of behind it.
