Who am I? Kaleb E. Cajas

Who am I?
Kaleb E. Cajas

My consumption of media almost entirely revolves around music. To be honest, I don’t spend much time on social media, nor do I watch much television. I get most of my political views from my Mother since she watches a lot of CNN, so whenever we go out for lunch she’ll catch me up on what’s going on in the world, but besides that? Well, I watch a lot of movies. Most of time my time is spent in my room recording and mixing, either that or I’m at the studio jamming out. It’s actually very therapeutic.
Truthfully, the news stresses me out, this world stresses me out, and there’s so much controversy today that I don’t even know what’s true or false anymore. I voice my opinions of life with music, I don’t preach about it on social media and I don’t search for who I am thru media, I search for it within myself. But to answer the question at hand I do enjoy making funny videos to post on my story while hanging out with friends and I do post pictures in order to share my music with everybody. I use media as a way to market myself as a musician, not to take selfies or share what I had for dinner, I try to be funny with it. Although recently I haven’t been posting much of anything, I took a hiatus in order to be more focused. A big problem my generation has is focusing. We’re constantly getting fed information by screens that follow us everywhere we go, it’s a plague, a plague that’s constantly distracting us, providing us with entertainment at every moment. I decided to take a break from all that and let my mind breath.
Now, the effect that media has on activists and protests varies in my opinion. Technology has made a wide variety of news and videos, of all different topics, available to be watched or read by the masses at any given time.  In this aspect its helped in the sharing of information and world wide events, but its also given everybody a false sense of importance.  Give a fool a pen and paper and other fools will consume every last word. This is where media begins to corrupt the true meaning behind certain movements. It has allowed anybody to post whatever they want, wether its good or bad, true or false. Certain people will publicly shame other for speaking up for themselves, will post offensive, racist and sexist comments against those who strive for social equality, so although media has given us the tools to reach the masses, it has also given a voice to those who are naive and ignorant.
Me and you as individuals, as media consumers, must know what to consume and what not to consume.  The internet is full of knowledge and opportunities to market ourselves as musicians, artists, activists or labels, we just need to use it for the right reasons, and not fall into the rat race.
