I believe my role in media consumption is being a part of the audience. The audience decides whether they want to engage in what is being presented. If it's entertaining, relatable, debatable, and interesting I'd continue to watch. I consume more drama and crime shows, rather than the news. Why is that? The news makes me feel sad, confused, annoyed and frustrated. The news can be overwhelming at times as well. Making media, for example, social media I am not a big fan of. It's hard to keep up with but it does give you the chance to get in contact with people and see what they're up to.
What I pick to consume from the media can positively or negatively influence me. It can also be deceiving. Some of the stories I’d see on social media would be shared with different emotions or intentions. Sharing a post because an individual thought others would find it funny, informative, awareness, and so on. This generation cannot survive without the media. Feeding off of the good and bad that is going on in the world and people’s lives. The most common issue that is talked about on social media pertains to drama. In my opinion, that can be very tiring and old. I like and dislike the media, it’s there for me when I am bored.
The way media covers activists, acts of resistance and protest can be twisted and turned from the message or purpose of the act. For example, a protest that is not physically harming anyone can be presented as if it was meant to, through the media. Which then can create violence. This is what I mean by the media influencing positively or negatively. In some eyes, retaliating in a violent way to resistance and protest is positive.
The way I feel about this relationship is, it’s toxic yet beneficial. It is toxic because of the backlash that comes with it. From the media to people taking matters into their own hands. The consequences that activists face but the benefits of it is the exposure the media gives them. Now they have people who are with and against them. The platform an individual can create through the media can be used for good or bad.
