Immigration Podcast// Final Project

My Project

My topic is on human rights. Human rights can range from police violence in Brazil to innocent people being murdered in Syria. What I’m going to put a focus on and raise awareness for is the rights of immigrants here in the United States (Especially Latinos). There has been a lot of discrimination and stereo typing in the U.S towards immigrants, now more than ever. One issue that really got me angry was the incarceration of migrant kids at warehouses ”tent cities” that very much resembled a cage. These little kids were taken from their families for weeks and were secluded in cages like if they were animals. Other acts, such as people being stopped on the streets because of the way they look is also extremely discriminatory and inhumane. Our president is not only supporting but advocating the deportation of people who have done nothing but provide the stability this country is lacking. Donald Trump is anti-immigration and wants the whole nation behind him; But this is why activists like myself are here. We are here to shine a light on the positives of immigration, we are here to end the false assumptions and put an end to the negative stereotypes.
An example of a Mexican Immigrant being stereotyped.
1. A Mexican sombrero
2. A taco in the guys hand
3. The guy using a lawnmower
Who are the real immigrants?

Why is this Important to me?

Being raised by two immigrants has helped me understand what it truly means to be an immigrant in the United States. I understand the struggles that immigrants have gone through and will continue to go through in order to achieve a better life. Being an immigrant in any country will come with barriers, but being an immigrant in the United States also comes with discrimination, stereotyping, and negligence. My parents are the reason that I can proudly say Immigrants are some of the most humble, respectful, and hardworking people in the States. I’m not saying that immigrants have special genes that make them this way, they just know that they are in a different country with different customs and when they apply their customs from back at home, they make great things happen here. Immigrants typically have one goal; That goal is to have a better life! But that’s hard to do when the system is against you… immigrants try to avoid problems, but even when they try and avoid problems, problems come to them.

My parents both migrated to the U.S about 30 years ago from two different countries. Thankfully enough they arrived here during a time period where getting your citizenship was fairly easy. Over the years, my parents got accustomed to the culture and to the way of living out here on the east coast. Gradually, they obtained better jobs and bought a home in New Jersey; Fast forward 21 years- my parents now have 3 kids and are proud business owners. This story right here is the reason that I fight for the rights of immigrants. I will always give a migrant person the benefit of the doubt, that they are coming here to better themselves and to provide for their families; not to cause harm or be “bad hombres” as Donald Trump would say.

Podcast

With my podcast, I hope to raise awareness for the public on how immigrants are currently being treated in the U.S (Latinos mostly). Different people have different opinions on immigration and what immigrants actually bring to our country.  There are many people who assume all Hispanics are here illegally and bring more harm than good to our society. I want to shine a light on all the positive impacts that immigrants have on this nation that goes unaccounted for by many people. I also want to speak about all the discrimination against us immigrants that is overlooked!

I am running weekly episodes, with the exception of my upcoming interviews. Every episode will only be about 5-10 minutes long. I have uploaded an introduction so far and 2 other episodes, one for last week and one for this week. I plan on continuing this even after the semester is over just to test the waters out. I think that my podcast has great potential, especially since I have spoken to a few activists on the more popular side.

IMMIGRATION PODCAST LINK

Twitter

Great platform to get your message out
I created a twitter account (@RODRIGUEZKEVINB) where I tweet about current events and use many hashtags, such as #AbolishICE and #EndFamilyDetention, #JusticeForAll, etc, which is bringing attention to my page from the appropriate audience. I also retweet many tweets of other activists and people who care for this issue.  I think Twitter is a great platform, where I can reach a greater audience. I’ve noticed that a lot of the people whose work I’ve looked into are huge on twitter; They use twitter to express how they feel, send messages out to the community, promote protests, retweet important current events, and just keep their audience in the loop. I am not only using twitter to raise awareness but to also promote my podcast.

  1. The link to your project is STILL not correct. I tried returning to your podcast episodes from your twitter link (from your handle because the twitter link itself is also incorrect) and the links in twitter are also not working. I tried googling and searching for the project but you give so little information about this that I cannot actually find it.
