The Interventionist

Quote  : “The Homeless Vehicle embodies Wodiczko’s practice of interrogative design by thoroughly combining the design needs for the immediate purposes of a homeless individual
while additionally supplying a visual strategy for the overarching condition of homelessness in the United States. Page 18

Meaning : This vehicle is very interesting and it proves that we have many homeless people in the US being ignored and mistreated. We can give them something as small as giving them their own place to live, just to comfort them. The US wants to help other’s but ignoring those who really need help, such as the homeless people.

Seeing Power Chapter 5 & 6

Quote : Ultimately, seeing power is a skill-set that emerges as one adapts to the camouflaging effects of spectacle and familiarizes oneself with the infrastructures of power that operates behind any cultural action” Page 115

Meaning : Seeing power is a skill that people make and give to oneself with physically having power that runs behind cultural action.

Quote : It’s not a question of being against the institution: We are the institution. It’s a question of what kind of institution we are, what kind of values we institutionalize, what forms of practice we reward, and what kinds of rewards we aspire to.” Page 118

Meaning : This quote caught my attention because most artist have to have this kind of attitude to be able to succeed. Being able to be in an organization and understanding what kind of organization. In the art world understanding your art work and why is it very unique between yours and the others. What kind of rewards you believe you deserve.

Quote : Every social scene has its own coded aesthetics, which both produce community and exclude those not familiar with it. This can serve as a defensive form of self-production, but it can also lead to sort of hermeticism” Page 143

Meaning : This caught my attention because it is very true and goes on in everyday life. Certain problems going on in life have a code for those who deal with this problem, excluding those who do not deal with it. For example, racism African American have their own code known as black lives matters, excluding those who are being racist and those who are just innocent but do not deal with the problem.

Quote : Losing-term commitments to physical locations that are able to retain playful ambiguity, contend with power openly inside their own communities, and accommodate forms of cultural expression that transgress racial, gendered, sexual, and class lines are a sure bet for making the world a better, more just home” Page 146

Meaning : This quote talks about community being open with their own community. Being able to make a difference either dealing with racial, gendered, sexual and class line. Making a change for those problems happening everyday. Making those in the community feel safe at home. Making the community better.

PROJECT : Taxi, North Adams 2004 Page 29

“Originally tested in Chicago, Illinois, the Taxi project is a method for facilitating public
speech. The mechanism behind this project is a GPS triggered digital sign on top of a car that allows community members to post messages.” I believe Haha’s art project is very interesting. I believe leaving a message or statement on the taxi’s catches other’s attention. Being able to have connection within the community. This can lead to a change for a better within the community. Such as, gender or racism.
