Midterm Project

The topic I’ve chosen to discuss is girls/women and violence. The reason why I want to make this project is to provide a therapeutic solution for the girls and women that have experienced violence. As well as bringing attention to this violation of human rights. Violence against females erupts due to gender-based discrimination, social norms, and gender stereotypes. Violence affects an individual physically, mentally, and emotionally. The feeling of being traumatized, fearful, restricted, ashamed, silenced, punished, taken advantage of and so on. This is for the people who may need or wants a way to express themselves without talking, or feeling held back. The act of violence promotes and is influenced by patriarchy, inequality, and oppression.
Starting off with the excuses to why violence is used towards girls and women. The role of women has been made and adjusted according to society. It is limited and controlled by men. Not only are girls and women restricted from educating themselves, but their being also is not valued and important. The expectations of a woman are to be delicate, soft, hard-working in a household, and supportive. “One in three women and girls experience violence in their lifetime” (unwomen.org). Where are girls and women encountering violence? They’re taking place in schools, at home, on the streets, at work, church, the internet, harmful practices such as forced and child marriage, trafficking, and more. The common forms of violence that take place around the world are domestic and intimate partner violence, sexual violence, sexual harassment, and emotional/psychological violence.
Why do people resort to violence? When an individual uses violence repeatedly it is their form of power, and having power over their victim. Women are physically attacked by their male partners, same-sex relationships and men experience this too. Although the most common is that women are battered by men. I also want to discuss knowing when you’re in a harmful situation or relationship that can lead to violence and cause severe damage. Knowing when you have allowed the comfort of violence into your life and thinking you’re the reason it started. It is important that people are aware if they’re at risk.
The therapeutic solution I want to provide is dance/movement therapy. Dance/movement therapy is the use of movement to support or promote the intellectual, emotional, and motor functions of the body. I see this as a way to speak up and to feel strong and powerful through movement. This project is not only for people who have experienced violence, but it is also for those who lack confidence, self-esteem, and needs improvement in their health and well-being. Furthermore into the project, I am creating a website that will educate and bring awareness to females encountering violence. The different forms of violence, the reasons why it is happening, and a way to heal from it.
Being that my major in psychology along with a minor in dance, dance/movement therapy is an inspiring career choice I discovered. My passion for dance and urge/want to help people using dance as a coping skill to express themselves and feel positive is what I want to share with people. Dance broke me out of my shell and made me feel alive. It made my health and well-being better. Psychology helped me to understand people and how to approach, listen, and react to their story and give suggestions, not advice. Often people who have encountered violence do not know whom to turn to and how to deal with it. In this predicament, the goal is to help the person who has experienced violence feel comfortable and acknowledge that they have a voice.

Images that relate to girls/women and violence:

Image result for me too movement
The #MeToo movement which was founded in 2006, is a movement to help survivors of sexual violence. "This movement is particularly for black women and girls, and other young women of color from low wealth communities, find pathways to healing. Our vision from the beginning was to address both the dearth in resources for survivors of sexual violence and to build a community of advocates, driven by survivors, who will be at the forefront of creating solutions to interrupt sexual violence in their communities" (metoomvmt.org).

This poster is a message to stop child marriage, girls around the world are being forced into child marriage. Violence takes place within this tradition or practice as well and needs to be prevented.
