The topic that I’m going to discuss in class is the issue or the suffering within the LGBTQ community. My main goal in this project is to go into details of how many of these people are being mistreated, since a lot of people are unaware about these mistreatment. Another thing I wanted to address the history of this cruelty with the LGBTQ community since WWII. The way I'm going to share my information with the audience is by creating a short fiction story about the current situation and to share the about the experience that these victims went through the conversion therapy camps. Since writing is one of the hobbies that I like doing I feel that I would have a greater chance to share my information about the issue. By giving a strong message I would be able to spread the message on the conversion camp.One of the main issues that the LGBTQ community has is many of them are the victim of Conversion Therapy/Camps.One of the main issues that I can discuss about is that there are secret organization called Conversion Therapy/Camp that harm the LGBTQ community. These secret organization are controlled by religious groups, like christian, who believes that homosexuality is a curse or a plague that is with in a person. Conversion camps is a place where religious group force a homosexual to change their sexual orientation. The irony of this is that these conversion camp are causing more harm physically and mentally to the people who are confused. In some cases religious household would force their own children to go to these camp if they are confused about their sexuality and sadly they would disowned their children if they fail change. These groups believed that with the right methods and the right treatment they can cure this illness, but many poor, oblivious or even confuse people who go there to change their sexual orientation end up getting tortured.Their tortured method of doing this requires electric shock therapy, being hosed down in freezing water and watching a inappropriate videos. Today these secret association are banned in 41 states due to these inhumane actions done to the homosexuals. However, about 20,000 teens are a victims of these cruel acts in a conversion therapy camp. The vice-president of the United States, Mike Pence supports these conversion therapy camps. To make matters worse Mike Pence used the 2016 election platform to promote the anti-LGBTQ. In the New York Times article, in 2006 Mike pence talked about how being gay is a choice and "keeping gays from marrying was not discrimination, but an enforcement of “God’s idea.” To Mike Pence he believes that religion or word of god is everything and final. Something that aren't part of christian religion should be dispose or stopped.
Some who were the victim of this cruel act remain anonymous and don't really want to share their experience in these camp. However, there is one victim who openly spoke out against these camps. One of the victims who suffered from this cruel act is named Samuel Briton. Samuel's parents are apart of the Southern Baptist missionaries and they believed the church and conversion therapy camps would be able to cure the illness of homosexuality. For Samuel, he became confuse about his sexuality, which his family forced him to go to a conversion therapy session where his therapist asked him lots of question. At the same time his therapist would tortured Samuel with various methods. In the New York Times article Samuel describes his experience in a Conversion Therapy Camp. Samuel says that, "therapist ordered me bound to a table to have ice, heat and electricity applied to my body. I was forced to watch clips on a television of gay men holding hands, hugging and having sex. I was supposed to associate those images with the pain I was feeling to once and for all turn into a straight boy. In the end it didn’t work. I would say that it did, just to make the pain go away." For Samuel he experience something traumatizing, that it resulted in him having suicidal thoughts.
Dating Back to World War Two Nazi Germany arrested and sent many Jews, black and homosexuals to the concentration camps. In order to distinguish the homosexual with the Jews, the German would place a pink triangle on their uniforms. However, now the pink triangle represents having pride of being a homosexual. The pink triangle symbols represents a gay friendly event and activities. Similar to the pink triangle the rainbow flag went through many changes at first. The meaning behind the rainbow flag was to symbolize nature, light or spring a peaceful world. However, many people would see this flag as a symbol for diversity among the homosexual community. Artist that supported the LGBTQ community or who did artwork on the community where Kieth Haring, who worked on not only artwork on HIV, but also created art on homosexuality. The other artist Gilbert and George took pictures of subject that tackled with death, monarchy and even homosexuality. Another photographer Diane Arbus take picture of transgender and homosexuality. Marsden Hartely painted picture of homosexuality and painted picture of fictional landscape during the transcendentalism period. Hockney David work on pop art as well as British Pop Art.
