SEEING
POWER: CHAPTER 4
“In all cultural
fields, there exists a large portion of the community desperate for social
recognition, a desperation that’s becoming ever more pronounced in a condition
of vast precarity.” Page 87.
This is true, most if
not all, fields desperately want attention and recognition. Mainly when it
comes to an artist, most artist want their art work to be looked at not only as
just an art work but more with finding its true meaning, understanding the
importance of artwork itself. Also, finding out why it stands out more than any
other art. They want to show others their talents, being able to feel
confidence with their art work. After all, hard works pays off, most people who
commit their selves in any kind of field are more likely to be recognized.
“Social networking
has only increased the culture of gotcha and outing, where the supposedly
progressive wing of arts increasingly partakes in a soft witch hunt, outing the
secret capitalists or artists who happen to be not on message.” Page 101
Artist
who are not on social media are not being recognized as those artists who live
their lives on social networking. People are more likely to be amused and
entertained by an artist who they heard or seen online than one who is also as
talented but does not expose their artwork to the networks. This is not
wrongful for those who desire to show their arts on live media but this also
pushes away those skilled and talented artist from showing off their strength
and love for art when theirs’ are not as exposed to society.
PUSSY
RIOT
Masha Alekhina: “I am accused of quasi-violent
actions. But violence is used against me. I have been in jail since March 3rd;
during this period law-enforcement officials, including operatives who handle
cases of extremism, have come four times to talk with me. They threatened me
mentioning my child, which, I think, is fully inadmissible. One person
persuaded me to reject the services of my lawyer. He spoke with me accusingly:
said, you are heirs of [Soviet] dissidents.”
This quote proves that the pussy riots were
being discriminated, not only because of the act they did but because they were
women fighting for their rights. Violence and threats were made against her
while in prison which shows how much power men have when it comes to prison.
Proving how a woman words against the law means nothing.
“Then as now, the formal charge was a thin
disguise. In 1964, the poet Joseph Brodsky was charged and convicted for
“parasitism”; in 1968, the participants of the demonstration against Soviet
invasion in Czechoslovakia were charged with violation of public order. The
Pussy Riot women are tried for hooliganism and for inciting religious hatred.”
This quote proves how fighting for your right
may cause you jail time. Protesting and speaking up for what you feel and believe
may cause you harm. It is always the law against you. No matter the difference
you want to make in life for the better, the law will most likely not accept
it. This relates more within the artists believes. They are denied for what
they fight for such as the pussy riots and Joseph Brodsky.
