Chapter 5
“And as we began to meet with the wide array of personalities in New Orleans, we too began to gain a sense of not only how the residents saw power operating in the landscape of spectacle, but also how they saw power distributed amongst themselves” (p.89 digital version).
Power can take over an individual or community knowingly and unknowingly. The people in New Orleans were able to realize how power affected them through the making of the project. Accepting outside assistance to help recover from the hurricane did not gravitate to their actual needs. They were sharing or in other words selling their stories to buyers with possibly different motives.
“Everyday people are beginning to understand at a very intuitive level that power uses culture to manipulate them” (p.92 digital version).
Power and culture go hand in hand, culture increases power. On the other hand power influences culture, or controls it. Whoever controls the beliefs, values, and actions of people through culture has power. This is where manipulation comes into play and how easily it can be done.
Chapter 6
“…capitalism will continue to shapes its subjects as long as its subjects circulate through its system” (p.105)
As long as people are using what capitalism has distributed through the environment, they will be under their influence. Capitalism motive is to sell and profit, not satisfy people’s needs.
“As we’ve seen, we are influenced more by the people around us and the spaces we circulate through than we might have ever imagined” (p.105)
It is true that people change and add on to a person’s being and personality.
Chapter 1: Nomads
“Haha’s work has focused on the exploration and articulation of social positions relative to particular sites.”
This team uses a common way of transportation that people see and need, to bring attention to their message. By using a digital sign that is on top of a taxi with a simple message that can be relatable to people.
The group “Haha” are artists that create a way for people to speak and express how power, culture, and social issues affect them and others by broadcasting it. When a person sees the message it can make people think, become curious, question what it means, etc. People are able to advocate anonymously their issues that could be taken positively or negatively.
