Interventionist: chapter 1
Quote: "The clothes were
designed as a response to the Gulf
War and combines fashion with
portable architecture. She designed
Refuge Wear to highlight and assist
those in need of refuge... Her
“Collective Wear” sculptures in the
form of tent domes with protruding
appendages" (19)
Meaning: In war there is always going to be casualties from soldiers and civilians. Also at the same time there is going houses or peoples home getting destroyed. For people war is unfair and unnecessary in our world, which is why people are angry. War can result in people losing their life and their home, due to the disagreement/conflict of a country.
Quote: “Interrogative Design” to
describe his works which both
address social issues as well as
provide a band-aid to them. Like
a band-aid, the works both temporarily
help a wound as well as
bring attention to it." (17)
Meaning: In our world there is always going to be social issue, but this artist "Interrogative Design" solves or temporarily
solve a problem. This also, brings attention to others and gives a strong message. For example his art took a photo of a person driving a homeless vehicle in front of Trump Tower. This shows the contrast between the rich and the poor.
Seeing Power CHAPTER 5-6
Quote: "She argues that war imagery can often feed the appetite for violence by ripping the subject from its context, and making its representation a facile consumption" (109)
Meaning: In war or the thought of war can change the attitude of a person. For example the Vietnam War change a lot of the soldiers lives like killing civilians in the war.
Quote: "In early 2014, an article in The New Web reported that at least 67.65 million Facebook user- and as many as 137.76 might have been fake...fake identities were being used these personalities to like their support" (119)
Meaning: Many would do this in order to gain publicity and attention towards a cause, themselves or for money. This dismantles the idea of having a freedom of speech to support a real cause.
Quote: "The idea of becoming allows us to think of ourselves and not as static isolated identities, but, instead, ever malleable potentialities"
Meaning: By thinking for our future and taking the right step for our future a we can become stronger and new, bettering ourselves and not being force to do what other tell us.
Quote: "When it comes to the question of audience, those involved in socially engaged art to be accused of naivete"
Meaning: Many people would just look at art as a drawing and not find the meaning behind it. In a way, this way of thinking is wrong. Most people would look at an art and observe it closely and still not find the meaning behind it. This also, goes for all artist as well.
One artist that I feel that talks about social culture and the issue that faces is Krzysztof Wodiczko. This artist takes pictures of people and areas. What I found fascinating about his work is the contrast/ irony behind his work. In one picture Wodiczko takes a picture of a homeless person walking in front of Trump Tower. The irony is that this person is waling in front of a rich building own by a rich person.
