Who Do You Think You Are?

Social media is such a powerful tool that is available to everyone around the world, but not everyone knows how to take advantage of that. So much information is at our disposal like the news, politics, and any bit of information from around the world. The way that I use social media is a way to absorb as much knowledge about current events, such as political controversies. The main social media that I use is instagram where I am able to keep up to date with the U.S government and policies changes around the world in the U.S. I feel that this important to keep up with because it affects everyone, the more I know of what is going on the better I am to see how it will affect me. Knowledge is power.

While on instagram I see events that have a great impact on current situations like society, news, and political events. Society now revolve around social media and everything it was to offer. People go as far to protest on social media to create a bigger impact and to attract more attention to what they are protesting. Same goes for the news where many of the current events can be viewed on social media. For politics it’s the same as well with the president going on twitter and ranting about irrelevant things that are of no benefit to the country.

A way that social media covers activist is that it spreads it like wildfire and will create momentum and go viral. I fell that this is a good way to spread awareness to the people and inspire people to join and protest together. One controversie going on right now is the Nike advertisement with Colin Kaepernick, the reason why this is circulating around so much is because Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem and many people disagreed with that and found it disrespectful.

This went viral because of that and many people started to boycott Nike but it was of no success because Nike actually ended up gaining more from all of these attention. It sparked a protest without them even doing much and bring attention to Kaepernick and his protest which is that he doesn't want to stand for a flag that oppresses people of color. Nike in a way is part of this protest because of them choosing Kaepernick for their new ad.
