I remember at the age of thirteen when I was able to
finally own my own laptop. My addiction was playing games online. My favorite
websites were dress up barbies, Nick Jr Games and Big Fish Game. The internet
back then was something for one’s entertainment. When it came down to school,
electronics were not very famous as they are now. Today, schools would be
nothing without electronics. In this generation you are more likely to involve yourself
within social media. I have many online accounts that are very well known, such
as Facebook, Instagram and snapchat. There is not a day that goes by where I do
not connect myself into my social media accounts. Facebook, I mainly use it to
get updates upon the news. Instagram, I tend to follow actors and celebrities
who catch my attention and seem very interesting. Lastly, I use snapchat to
keep contact within friends and family, more like an entertainment. It has
become a habit. Most of the news I get are mainly from online. Sadly, I do not
remember the last time I actually grabbed a newspaper. Even though I am into
the social media world, I believe it can take away focus and attention from
accomplishing many tasks.

Most
people’s lives involve social media. The mass media has influenced education,
the picture of society and politics. Many students as Jeff Dunn stated in “The
10 Best and Worst Ways Social Media Impacts Education”, that students, “rely on the accessibility of information on
social media specifically and the web in general to provide answers. That means
a reduced focus on learning and retaining information.” In other words, students
become very lazy. Society are so into the media that they forget about the real
world. Lastly, politics are more likely to start their campaign on networks
such as Facebook and Twitter. They are able to express and get feedback from
others online. Politics are able to get others to join them not having to
actually go out to the public. The internet is basically running our lives.

The media covers activists, acts of resistance and protest. A
great and common example is the hashtag, “BlackLivesMatter”. This involves with
race, violence and law enforcement. African American are still being mistreated
in today’s generation. There is no way it can be solved because of the simple
fact that America has established that racism is not visible. Because of this
problem going on, others feel that their words can be heard when trying to solve
this everyday life problem. Mostly on social media where all the problems are
exposed. In “How Social Media has Shaped Black Lives Matter”, Caroline Simon
states a great example when it comes to the death of Trayon Martin. Where he
was fatally shot by a white police officer. She stated, “Black Lives
Matter movement is a quintessential example of a movement that's found
successful amplification through social media. According to a newly released Pew study, the
hashtag has been used nearly 30 million times on Twitter – an average of
17,003 times per day.” Proving that social media was the only way this problem
could have been heard.

After all, I believe social media is
very helpful when it comes to finding out the updated news but I also believe
that society needs to connect within the real world. The more we communicate in
the real world, we can most likely make a difference and be heard for any situation
that should be solved. Such as the black lives matters problem. We need to disconnect
ourselves when it comes to politics and protest and be able to actually speak
up for what we believe in.
